Sangay Wangmo
Mitigation and Community Outreach Specialist
Thimphu, Bhutan

Sangay Wangmo supports ongoing projects in Bhutan, particularly community outreach and coordination. She is based in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. Her primary project work is to support development of a disaster scenario for Bhutan, which is a component of our Amplified Risk program. In this role, she conducts outreach consultations with community members and organizations, collects and synthesizes community-sourced information about hazards, and undertakes other data collection. She also conducts risk sensitization programs in local institutions such as schools, hospitals and utility agencies to support community mitigation efforts.
Her prior experience included field study, mapping and mitigation of a flood-prone community. She used GIS tools to map areas vulnerable to flood hazard and assessed the socio-economic impacts of recurring floods. She analyzed historical flood data to predict future risk and to propose flood risk mitigation strategies. She also conducted community surveys on livestock and livelihoods to assess socio-economic impacts. Having visited dams and early warning systems in Bhutan, she is familiar with the risks as well as the potential to protect more people from impacts of flood hazard events. Ms. Wangmo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sustainable Development from College of Natural Resources (CNR), Royal University of Bhutan.
