Delhi Schoolchildren Learn Disaster-Smart Choices at Summer Camp

Updated: Feb 9, 2021

In June, our partner organization in India, the GeoHazards Society (GHS), presented a two-day workshop and a street play about disaster risk reduction at the National Bal Bhavan summer camp. National Bal Bhavan is an organization which “aims at enhancing the creative potential of children by providing them various activities, opportunities and common platform to interact, experiment, create and perform according to their age, aptitude and ability.”

Each summer, National Bal Bhavan organizes a month-long summer camp for children, which is much sought after by the schoolchildren of Delhi: roughly 7000 students take part in various activities. This year, those activities included a children’s workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction conducted by GHS.

GHS regularly collaborates with a local street-play group as part of its school safety programs, having the actors perform a brief play with an earthquake safety theme. At the National Bal Bhavan, GHS used the street play to educate all of the children attending the summer camp. Following an introduction by GHS President Hari Kumar, the actors performed for the morning assembly, with all 7000 children watching.

As Hari Kumar reports, “It was an amazing experience standing before this sea of eager faces.”
